Promethean Literary Journal

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

Edited by students, Promethean seeks to publish the work of CCNY's students, faculty and alumni that engages new audiences, speaks to the moment and showcases diverse voices.

Our current submission period will be open until Friday, December 22, 2023, 11:59 pm. These are the guidelines for our submission period. Please review them carefully before submitting

  • No theme this year. Just send us your best work!
  • Please submit one prose piece (double-spaced, 5,000-word max), one play or screenplay (standard format, 15 pages max), or up to four poems (8 single-spaced pages max for poems combined). You may submit excerpts from longer works.
  • Identify your genre (for writing) in your cover letter (more on this below) as Fiction, Nonfiction, Creative Nonfiction, Hybrid, Play, Screenplay or Poetry. We do not publish essays.
  • Multiple written submissions are allowed, as long as they are different genres. All written submissions should be in 12-point easily readable font.
  • We also accept artwork for the cover and interior of the issue. Please submit up to six, high-res, art files (jpg or png).
  • Title your submission like so: LastNameFirstInitial>underscore>genre (Example: JonesT_Poetry)
  • Cover letters should include your name, telephone and email contact (whatever email you typically use), CCNY role (Undergrad, Grad, Faculty, Staff or Alum), a word count, the real title(s) of your work(s), your genre (see above for the list) and a third-person short bio. (Example: Mickey Mouse is currently a student at City College, majoring in English literature. Originally from an amusement park in Orlando, FL, they moved to NYC when they were in the 8th grade. They are passionate about roller coasters, spinning teacups and Minnie Mouse. They plan to graduate from City College in spring 2024 and hope to pursue a career in animation.)
  • Work transmitted via e-mail will not be accepted for consideration.

The journal receives many beautiful pieces, more than we can accept for one journal. Accepted pieces will be read through carefully a number of times and will go through an editing process with one of our amazing editors. We will work with you collaboratively and respectfully. Our goal is to bring your piece to its best version through comments, suggested edits, and if you like, a Zoom or in-person meeting. We promise to be respectful of you and the editing process and ask that you do the same. Refusal to work with our editors or to consider changes will make it impossible for us to publish your piece, even if it’s initially accepted.

Promethean does accept simultaneous submissions, but in the event that your work is accepted for publication elsewhere, please let us know right away. Only previously unpublished works will be considered for publication.
